What is Prison Island Melbourne?
Prison Island Melbourne is an indoor adventure comprising 34 themed rooms, each a standalone challenge that tests your brain, body, or teamwork.
It is not an escape room. There is no single mystery to solve. Instead, your team races between puzzle cells, scoring points for every one you complete.
Prison Island feels like a real-life video game combined with a fitness challenge, and you control your own pace.
Why we chose Prison Island for a family outing
We chose Prison Island for a family outing because it offered an indoor, all-weather activity that combined physical fun with mental challenges, something all three of my kids could enjoy together.
We were after something different. With three kids, each with very different personalities, I needed something that was fun, a little active, and gave them room to shine.
A few mums recommended Prison Island in Docklands, and after checking out the photos, I was sold. Indoor, air-conditioned, and full of movement? Yes, please.
Review: What it was really like visiting Prison Island with my kids
The whole experience was surprisingly smooth. The staff were friendly, the space was clean and cool, and after a short briefing, we were off.
My daughter went straight for the laser maze. My boys were obsessed with the logic puzzles and scoreboards.
What I loved most was the balance. No one felt left out. Each of us found different strengths; some rooms were about brainy abilities, others focused on balance, speed, or coordination.
We could retry any room, so failure never felt frustrating. It was more like βLetβs go again and beat it!β
What types of challenges are in the rooms?
Each Prison Island room focuses on one of three core areas. Some are mental, some physical, and others need a mix of communication and strategy.
Every room has a different theme and puzzle mechanic.
- Brain puzzles β memory, logic, codes, light sequences
- Physical rooms β crawling through lasers, jumping platforms, balance boards
- Team-based β communication rooms where two players need to sync actions
We all had our favourites, and there was never a moment of boredom. The layout made it easy to jump from room to room.
How to get to Prison Island, Melbourne?
We took the tram to Docklands Drive and walked a few minutes; it could not have been easier. The venue is inside The District Docklands shopping centre, near ArtVo and Costco. For families driving in, parking was a breeze.
- By Tram β Take Route 86 to Waterfront City/Docklands Dr (stops right out front)
- By Train β Walk 15 mins from Southern Cross or catch the free tram loop
- Parking β 90 mins free at The District Docklands car park (enter via Pearl River Rd)
- Ride Share β Drop-off available on Star Crescent
Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early so you have time to check in and store your belongings in a locker.
What can you do near Prison Island before or after your session?
After we finished at Prison Island, we grabbed a bite and explored the Docklands area. It turned into a full family day out.
- ArtVo β Interactive 3D photo art experience next door. Super fun for kids.
- GlowGolf β Mini golf in the dark. My boys could not stop laughing.
- Urban Alley Brewery β Surprisingly good kids’ menu and great coffee.
- OβBrien Icehouse β If your kids are still bursting with energy, go ice skating.
The District is compact, stroller-friendly, and weather-proof. We would absolutely plan a multi-stop day here again.
Is Prison Island Melbourne worth the money?
Yes, 100 per cent. We paid around $165 total for our family of five, and it felt like great value. The quality of the rooms, the energy of the space, and the fact that it was both active and intellectual made it feel unique.
I would rather spend this than another arcade or movie outing any day.
Top tips for visiting Prison Island with kids
After doing it once, here are my personal tips for making the most of your visit:
- Book online early, especially on weekends and school holidays
- Wear comfy clothes and sneakers β you will move a lot
- Donβt spend too long in one room β keep rotating to stay energised
- Bring water bottles and take short breaks between rooms
- Split into teams to mix up the challenge styles
Also, keep the wristbands safe; they track your score and cell access.
How does Prison Island compare to an escape room?
Prison Island is way more flexible. There is no waiting around for staff resets or getting stuck for 45 minutes. Here, you are free to move, retry, skip or strategise your own way.
It felt like an intelligent play space with no pressure and way more fun for kids.
Would I recommend Prison Island Melbourne?
Yes. If your family likes puzzles, games, or anything a bit different, this is a must. It is inclusive, challenging, exciting, and, most of all, fun. It is hard to find something all three of my kids enjoy, but Prison Island nailed it.
We will go again, and I might even organise a team-building night with other parents.
